Career Interview

“Hone in on what your voice is” – A Career Conversation with Kristy Drutman

In this video, Kristy Drutman discusses her work as an entrepreneur, climate communications expert (known as Brown Girl Green), and Co-Founder of the Green Jobs Board, a climate tech start-up bridging the equity and inclusion gap within the green economy through conversations, resources, and pathways to bring more diverse talent into the environmental field. Speaking with Center for Climate Justice Program Manager Remy Franklin, Kristy discusses how she founded two companies focused on climate justice careers and her advice for college students interested in pursuing communications and marketing.

If you’re interested in a career similar to Kristy’s, here’s a word of advice from her interview:

“It’s such a huge, amazing opportunity right now to get into communications and marketing. There are so many more tools that exist now that just didn’t exist even a year or two ago. Companies and organizations are really trying to push forward impactful messaging.

Start building a portfolio. Start trying to hone in on what your type of voice is, whether that’s a writing voice or a video voice… start honing in on that. And then try to find ways you can volunteer or support organizations who want to put out that kind of content….

With Green Jobs Board, we hope to be the resource for a lot of you who are watching this because I remember being in a seat like yours, in a position like yours, and having no idea where to get started. I’m literally building this platform from that perspective as a previous UC student and understanding that we need more information and steps on how to build careers in this space. I hope that I can play some sort of role to make that easier for anyone who is listening.”

Our Climate Justice Career Interview series helps students connect climate justice to their field of study by showcasing professionals working on equitable climate solutions across industries.
