Climate Justice Curriculum
“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
-Martin Luther King Jr.
Drawing inspiration from a long history of social justice movements and an existing University of California online course called Bending the Curve, we are currently developing a transformative and interactive Climate Justice course for UC undergraduate students. Lectures will be delivered by a diverse group of faculty members and will explore topics that center the disproportionate impacts of climate change on low-income communities and communities of color. By centering these perspectives within our curriculum, we believe this course will attract more underrepresented minorities to the climate field.
This project holds that in addition to the important task of raising students’ awareness around climate science and systemic injustice, education designed to encourage community building and to cultivate students’ inner resilience and sense of agency is central for long-term engagement with climate justice work. We see this curriculum as an effective strategy to mobilize students toward equitable climate action that supports our vision of a world where extractive systems and economies have been transformed into ones that are regenerative, equitable, and support the sustained wellbeing of all life.
